Empowerment:

The state of being empowered to do something: the power, right or authority to do something.

Thanks, Merriam-Webster!

But how does this apply to real-life? Why is everyone talking about it? And what on Earth does it have to do with women?

First things first… empowerment can be used in many contexts and up until a few years ago, you would mostly hear in a business context: people would talk about workplace empowerment or employee empowerment.

That’s all cool, but the empowerment I’m talking about is something different. It is a process by which people gain control over their own lives.

It is a process that fosters power in people for use in their own lives, their community and their society.

Okay… how about Women Empowerment then?

Women Empowerment, in my own words, is:

  • To stop letting others define what you can and cannot do
  • To confront patriarchal and misogynist societal patterns
  • To recognize and challenge sexist abusive behaviors
  • To come together against sexual harassment and assault
  • To be assertive and confident
  • To love and take care of yourself
  • To conquer your fears and overcome your limiting beliefs
  • To own your story and be yourself authentically and unapologetically

In a nutshell…

  • To (re)gain control over your life

It is our birthright to own what we can be, do and accomplish!

It has nothing to do with battle of sexes, victimizing women or demonizing men.

NO

In fact, man can and should join this fight!

A society where women are empowered is a society that is more equal, fair and safe for everybody.
